Ken Chevern, President of the St. Petersburg College Foundation’s Board of Directors and President of the Pinellas Division of Bank of Tampa receives a check from Julie Scales, Executive Director of the Pinellas Community Foundation, for matching funds under the State of Florida’s First Generation Scholarship Program.

Moneys for the match came from the “Francis Kiernan Schoonmaker Memorial Award Fund,” which was established through a bequest by Margaret Schoonmaker in memory of her husband.  Mr. Schoonmaker, who passed away in 1993, was a senior vice president and trust officer at First National Bank of Clearwater (now Regions Bank)  and active in many civic and community organizations. Both he and his wife were very interested in education and educational issues and the Board of Governors of the Community Foundation found it fitting that moneys from this fund should be used for scholarships.

The First Generation Scholarship Program was established by the Florida Legislature In 2006 and provides 100% matching funds to state universities and community colleges to provide scholarships to students who are the first in their family to attend college and earn a bachelor’s degree.
